Keep Your Pets Away From Chemicals

As winter roll around, many proactive lawn owners will make one more pass across their lawns with chemical treatments such as fertilizers, fungicides and insecticides. While often helpful for lawns, these winter treatments can be harmful for pets. If you are planning on using chemicals in your lawn, be sure to invest in products that are pet-safe whenever possible. In the event that you use products that are not pet safe, be sure to keep you pets off your lawn for several hours after application. When you do let them outside, supervise them for the first few days to make sure they don’t get their mouths or noses into any chemically-treated spots.

Watch Out for Toxic Growth and Other Harmful Yard Products

In some areas of the country, cooler weather can mean new growth in the backyard and beyond. Many fungi such as wild mushrooms can spring up when temperatures dip and sunlight appears less frequently. While many wild mushrooms are safe to eat, some are toxic and should not be ingested. As you can’t tell this to your dog or cat, it’s best to remove mushrooms whenever you see them.

Many property owners will also use mulch to cover their flowerbeds for their colder months. If you’re going to be using mulch, be sure to avoid cocoa mulch if you have pets. Cocoa mulch has a sweet smell and contains caffeine and theobromine, the same substances that make chocolate dangerous to pets.
